Balanced Advice
Residential property — particularly period homes — will inevitably contain elements of wear, ageing or historic alteration. Our role is to distinguish between normal maintenance considerations and issues that require further investigation.
What Does a Chartered Building Surveyor Do?
If you are buying a property, planning alterations, or assessing a building’s condition, you may come across the role of a Chartered Surveyor.
While often associated with valuation, the role is considerably broader. A Chartered Building Surveyor provides independent, expert advice on the condition, performance, and risks associated with buildings, helping clients make informed decisions with clarity and confidence.
At its core, the role is focused on identifying risk, understanding its implications, and advising on the most appropriate course of action before decisions are made. This may relate to a property purchase, ongoing maintenance, or proposed works.
For residential clients, this is most clearly reflected in a Level 3 Building Survey, where the emphasis is not simply on identifying defects, but on explaining their cause, significance, and likely consequences. This allows clients to understand not just what is wrong, but what it means in practical and financial terms.
What Is a Chartered Surveyor?
A Chartered Surveyor is a professional accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the leading global body for property and construction professionals.
This designation reflects a high standard of training, experience, and professional conduct, with members required to adhere to strict ethical and technical standards.
Surveyors may operate across a range of disciplines, although many specialise in particular areas. In residential property, a Chartered Building Surveyor provides objective, technically grounded advice, with a focus on protecting the client’s position and ensuring decisions are made with a full understanding of risk.
Our objective is straightforward
